In response to users’ increasingly sophisticated expectations from commercial websites, at an early stage in its development Intendance recognised the need for both intranet and extranet functionality. The first website we built – in 2000 – provided an extranet for the global membership of the International Manganese Institute (IMnI), which required ‘Chinese walls’ between the information provided online to different member groups.

The use of both intranets and extranets has grown rapidly over recent years and to ensure that we can still build state-of-the-art facilities, Intendance has continued to explore new technologies. The IMnI extranet was hand-coded from scratch and took many days to complete, but we now have the capability to roll out secure website content far faster and with much greater functionality. The systems needn’t be expensive either.
